Just down the road from Caorle: how to get to Porto Santa Margherita

If you’re travelling by car to Porto Santa Margherita, the most convenient motorway exits are San Stino di Livenza on the A4 motorway if you’re coming from Venice, or Portogruaro if you’re coming from Austria/Trieste. From both of these two exits, the best option is to follow the signs for Caorle. Once you get to Caorle, you just need to head west for 2 km to get to Porto Santa Margherita. It takes approximately 30 minutes from both San Stino di Livenza and Portogruaro.

Caorle doesn’t have a train station. If you’re travelling by train, you should get off at Portogruaro-Caorle station, where you’ll find lots of buses run by the local company ATVO. As well as connecting Portogruaro station with Caorle town centre, many of them also go through Porto Santa Margherita.

You can also easily get to Porto Santa Margherita by bus from San Donà di Piave, Portogruaro, Mestre or Venice by taking one of the ATVO lines to Caorle.
In addition, roughly once an hour a local bus (number 97) runs between Porto Santa Margherita and Caorle. You can buy tickets at the station or on board.
It takes just 15 minutes to get to Caorle from Porto Santa Margherita by bike, or you can walk there in approximately 40 minutes. If you’d like to walk to Caorle, we recommend the handy ferry on the Livenza river, which can also carry bicycles.

The nearest airports to Caorle are Venice and Treviso. You can take an ATVO bus from both of them to Porto Santa Margherita. Alternatively, you can hire a car in the airport: see the RentalCars website.

Another option that we’d recommend is the practical GoOpti transfer service. You can get great deals and save money if you share the journey with other people.

The town centre

As well as numerous aparthotels, apartments, villas and hotels, Porto Santa Margherita has a very nice central pedestrian area that is lined with lots of trees, shops, gathering places and amusement arcades, as well as pizzerias, bars and restaurants where you can eat delicious fresh fish and other Veneto specialities and sip fragrant wines from the region.

Sport

Sports lovers can take part in a wide range of activities in the sea (such as sailing, swimming, jet skiing, surfing, canoeing) and on the land (such as cycling, basketball and tennis). There are no fewer than five tennis courts with floodlights, meaning they can be used both in the day and in the evening. Enthralling tournaments are often organized on them.
In addition, Porto Santa Margherita has an outstanding heated indoor pool that’s open in the winter as well as the summer.

Nearby attractions to visit

A short distance from Porto Santa Margherita is Ca’ Corniani, a rural centre that lies between the Livenza River and the Brian Canal. As well as visiting the old manor house and the lodgings for sharecroppers and tenant farmers, you can enjoy nibbles and the excellent wine made there. The countryside is a marvellous place for bike rides. You can either bring your own bicycles or hire them there.

Another interesting place to visit is the tiny village of San Gaetano near Caorle, which has just 150 inhabitants. It was once home to the barons of the noble Franchetti family, who made it into a centre of agriculture and livestock farming.
Among the illustrious guests who visited over the years were Henry Fonda and Ernest Hemingway, who was inspired to write “Across the River and into the Trees” during his stays in the area.

Sailing in Porto Santa Margherita

Porto Santa Margherita is the ideal location for people who love sailing and using motor boats, as well as all those who’d like to give this relaxing, engaging activity a try. Porto Santa Margherita is the perfect place to savour some serene sailing thanks to the clean, calm sea and above all the wind that blows in the resort.

“Marina 4” has 450 berths in the water and room for a further 80 vessels on land, as well as additional spaces in its yard and shed. It’s open to both sailing and motor boats, whose owners can take advantage of the “Marina 4” mechanical support service with specialist staff and a shop stocking accessories to cater to all of their nautical needs. It’s also possible to hire jet skis and fill up with fuel.

Many of the regattas organized by the Porto Santa Margherita Boat Club play a key, distinctive part in the resort’s identity. The most famous ones are the Cinquecento, the Duecento, the Autumn Championship and the Prosecco’s Cup open regatta.
