It\u2019s a picturesque, increasingly popular place with more than a <strong>thousand years of history <\/strong>behind it, so exploring it is an unforgettable experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The history of Sesto al Reghena<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From a <strong>pre-Roman settlement<\/strong> to a monastic site under the Lombards, Sesto al Reghena has witnessed eras of great historical significance. The <strong>abbey complex<\/strong> is dedicated to Saint Mary and it was built between 730 and 735 AD by three noble Lombard brothers. They endowed the monastery with their property, which was spread throughout what is now known as the Triveneto area.<br>The abbey looked just like a <strong>medieval castle<\/strong>, complete with towers, walls and a moat for defensive purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a devastating raid in 889, the Magyars burned and destroyed the complex. It subsequently rose from the ashes during the <strong>Middle Ages<\/strong>, a time which helped to shape the character of the site. Between 1300 and 1330, a group of painters who were pupils of Giotto adorned the abbey with numerous <strong>magnificent frescoes<\/strong>, some of which can still be seen today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/sesto_reghena-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151171\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An invasion by the Republic of Venice in the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century marked another key chapter in the history of Sesto al Reghena, which was later <strong>annexed by the Kingdom of Italy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The very name \u201cSesto al Reghena\u201d has roots that stretch back through thousands of years of history, underlining the town\u2019s ancient roots. Sesto means \u201cSixth\u201d and it was a<strong> Roman military post <\/strong>situated by the sixth milestone on the road between Iulia Concordia and Noricum, while Reghena is the name of the river that flows through the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/sesto_reghena-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151196\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What to see in Sesto al Reghena<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u201cSanta Maria in Silvis\u201d Benedictine Abbey<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the main attractions in Sesto al Reghena is unquestionably the <strong>Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria in Silvis<\/strong>. The name comes from the Latin word for \u201cforest\u201d (\u201csilva\u201d) and is a reference to the vast expanse of woodland that once surrounded it. Still today, it stands in large grounds full of greenery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To get to the abbey\u2019s central square, you go through the last of the seven entrance <strong>towers<\/strong> that were originally found here. On the other side of the square is the <strong>bell tower<\/strong>, which once served as the castle\u2019s watchtower. On the left is the former abbey chancery and on the right are the <strong>abbot\u2019s living quarters<\/strong>, now home to the town hall. On the fa\u00e7ade of the building are well-preserved frescoes featuring the coats of arms of commendatory abbots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/sesto_reghena-5-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151181\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The majestic architecture is an entrancing sight for the many tourists who flock here. The 15<sup>th<\/sup> century Grimani entrance tower, the abbot\u2019s living quarters and the lavish decorations inside the basilica by painters from Giotto\u2019s school all bear witness to the site\u2019s historical and cultural importance. In particular, we recommend looking inside the abbey at the <strong>beautiful finds<\/strong>, <strong>frescoes<\/strong> and altar, as well as the <strong>crypt<\/strong> below the chancel, where the urn of Saint Anastasia is kept.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/sesto_reghena.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151201\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The historic centre<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although it\u2019s only small, the <strong>historic centre<\/strong> of Sesto al Reghena is packed with charming and historical sights. Its marvels include the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century \u201c<strong>Villa Zanardini<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 which has two wings of service buildings known as \u201cbarchesse\u201d alongside it and is open to the public on special National Trust for Italy (FAI) days \u2013 and <strong>\u201cPalazzo Burovich\u201d<\/strong>, the fa\u00e7ade of which is partly frescoed with rural scenes. Don\u2019t miss the delightful <strong>Italian garden<\/strong>, which is a treasure trove of green flowerbeds and harmoniously arranged roses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/sesto_reghena-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151186\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The natural landscape<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Sesto al Reghena, nature lovers can admire gorgeous scenery on relaxing walks surrounded by greenery.<br><br>It\u2019s only around 300 metres from the abbey to <strong>\u201cPrati Burovich\u201d<\/strong>, where you can fill your lungs with cool air as you take a gentle stroll in the shade of <strong>elm, oak and mulberry trees<\/strong>, along marked paths among meadows filled with various species of flowering plants that promote pollination by bees, as well as providing ideal shelter for a range of types of birds and squirrels.<br><br>It\u2019s also worth taking a look at the <strong>\u201cFontana di Venchiaredo\u201d<\/strong>, a karst spring in the wood between Sesto al Reghena and Bagnarola that inspired the famous Italian writers <strong>Ippolito Nievo and Pier Paolo Pasolini<\/strong>.<br>&nbsp;<br>Finally, we recommend taking the time to see the recently restored <strong>\u201cStalis Watermills\u201d <\/strong>on the Lemene river. The name comes from the Italian word \u201cstalle\u201d and refers to the sheds and shelters for farm animals that once stood there. Visitors can reflect, relax and enjoy some peace and quiet in the magical atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/sesto_reghena-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151191\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to get to Sesto al Reghena<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a number of ways to get to this beautiful, historical treasure trove in Friuli.<br><br>The most convenient and advisable option is to travel by <strong>car<\/strong>. It takes about 10 minutes to drive there from Portogruaro. Follow the free A28 motorway, take the \u201cSesto al Reghena\u201d exit and follow the signs for \u201cSesto al Reghena\u201d. It\u2019s just a few kilometres away.<br><br>If you choose to travel by <strong>train <\/strong>rather than driving, get off at Portogruaro\/Caorle station and then take an ATVO bus. It&#8217;ll take about 20 minutes to get to Sesto al Reghena.<br><br>If you\u2019re fond of <strong>cycling<\/strong>, we recommend the route that goes from Portogruaro to Sesto al Reghena via Gruaro.
