{"id":3151242,"date":"2024-02-12T15:59:44","date_gmt":"2024-02-12T14:59:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/?p=3151242"},"modified":"2025-07-07T08:19:01","modified_gmt":"2025-07-07T08:19:01","slug":"cordovado-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/en\/curiosity\/cordovado-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Cordovado"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>It takes just 15 minutes to drive from Portogruaro to Cordovado, a municipality in <strong>Friuli Venezia Giulia<\/strong> where you can still see the remains of the <strong>old medieval town <\/strong>and its mighty walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The town was given to the bishop of Concordia Sagittaria in order to defend a branch of the Tagliamento river that has now dried up. The name \u201cCordovado\u201d comes from the Latin words <strong>\u201cCurtis\u201d and \u201cVadum\u201d<\/strong>, which refer to a court near a ford across the Tagliamento river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The little town has been officially listed among the most beautiful villages in Italy by the <strong>\u201cBorghi Pi\u00f9 Belli d\u2019Italia\u201d <\/strong>association. Still today, you can admire its old walls, complete with ramparts, a moat and two entrance towers, one of which has a drawbridge. When you visit this little town, you\u2019ll soon find yourself picturing atmospheric historical scenes, with rich lords and ladies, merchants, soldiers and artisans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mura-e-fossato.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151234\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The bishop of the <strong>diocese of Concordia<\/strong> <strong>Sagittaria <\/strong>was the predominant force in Cordovado in the early days, but in 1420 AD it came under the control of the <strong>Republic of Venice<\/strong> and lost its defensive, military and ecclesiastical role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first<strong> Shrine to the Virgin Mary in the Diocese<\/strong> was built here in 1592 after a Marian apparition and it became a famous destination for numerous pilgrims. It\u2019s a Baroque gem that can still be seen today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Santuario-madonna-d.Grazie-e-Palazzo-d.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151214\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What to see in Cordovado<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>historic centre<\/strong> of the town in the Province of <strong>Pordenone<\/strong> is the most interesting part to visit. History is intertwined with the fragrances and colours of the countryside and the peaceful horizons of writer <strong>Ippolito Nievo<\/strong>\u2019s fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can enter the <strong>Medieval Castle<\/strong> through one of the two <strong>gate towers<\/strong> that are still standing, one of which has a <strong>drawbridge <\/strong>you can cross. It\u2019s also fascinating to walk around the outside of the walls, admiring the moat and the south-west ramparts. It\u2019s a great way to take stunning photos of a truly picturesque place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Torre-nord-da-esterno.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151219\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve gone through the entrance, you\u2019ll find a large courtyard with a number of buildings looking over it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Church of San Girolamo<\/strong> \u2013 standing right next to the northern gate of the fortified town.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Palazzo Freschi\/Piccolomini<\/strong> \u2013 built in the late 17<sup>th<\/sup> century by the noble Attimis family, its fa\u00e7ade and floor plan both reflect the classic style of Venetian architecture. As well as a number of age-old trees, its walled grounds contain Damask rose bushes arranged to form a sun-shaped maze.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Palazzo Bozza\/Marrubini <\/strong>\u2013 used for staff housing and as a service building, this refined construction dates back to the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century. It features porticoes, arches and a host of frescoes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/mura-palazzo-Piccolomini.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151239\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Palazzo Agricola<\/strong> \u2013 the large arches at the front of this Renaissance building provide access to the ground floor. Its grounds and garden stretch out behind it. You can stop for a refreshing break at the caf\u00e9 on the ground floor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Outside the medieval castle, just past the drawbridge of the southern tower, you\u2019ll find the Romano-Gothic style <strong>Church of Sant\u2019Andrea<\/strong>, which was opened in 1966. It contains various pieces of contemporary art by the Veronese artist Pino Casarini, including paintings, glass and works of plastic art.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>At the entrance to the North Tower is a <strong>First World War memorial <\/strong>to remember those who fell during the conflict and serve as a warning to young people today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A short walk of a few hundred metres will take you to the complex containing the <strong>Town Hall<\/strong>. Nearby stands the <strong>Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie<\/strong>, which was built in 1603 after an appearance of the Virgin Mary. The building is adorned with stucco work, bas-reliefs, statues, paintings and frescoes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/palazzo-agricola-con-bar.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151209\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Ippolito Nievo literary park<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A literary park is a place that can <strong>inspire the works of numerous authors<\/strong>, thanks to features shaped by humans and nature that encapsulate the historical, natural and cultural values of local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept for the <strong>Ippolito Nievo literary park<\/strong> was devised by the writer Stanislao Nievo in conjunction with Cordovado Town Council and the Ippolito Nievo Foundation, because the poet\u2019s works were inspired by this area, and especially the Old Cathedral, the square outside the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, the nearby Fontana di Venchiaredo and the Stalis Watermills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Visiting holy sites in Cordovado<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Cordovado\u2019s historic and artistic heritage is enriched by a number of churches. The ones that you can visit in the town\u2019s historic centre are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Church of Sant\u2019Andrea (also known as the Old Cathedral)<\/strong> has been destroyed and rebuilt a number of times. Inside, octagonal pillars hold up large arches and trusses support the wooden roof. The 16<sup>th<\/sup> century frescoes in the main chapel are attributed to Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo. The bell tower stands on the northern side.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The octagonal <strong>Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie<\/strong> was opened on 1 May 1603. Following the appearance of the Virgin Mary, numerous pilgrims travelled to it. The building is adorned with stucco work, bas-reliefs, statues, paintings and frescoes. Giovanni Grassi made the high altar out of marble.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Chiesa-SantAndrea.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151224\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The oratory of Santa Caterina<\/strong> has frescoes on its southern and northern walls that are attributed to pupils of Tommaso da Modena from Veneto and Friuli, as well as other local artists. There\u2019s an interesting altarpiece with a Madonna and Child.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Standing right next to the northern gate of the old town, the <strong>church of San Girolamo in Castello<\/strong> is now private property. It has a single nave, with visible brickwork. There are barrel tiles on the sloping roof, which is supported by trusses. There\u2019s a marble altar in the apse, with an 18<sup>th<\/sup> century altarpiece. On one wall is a fresco showing the Virgin Mary on a throne, between a female saint and Saint James the Great.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Chiesa-S.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151229\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Historical<\/strong> <strong>re-enactments and the Palio dei Rioni<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re on holiday in the area in the last week of August or the first week of September, we highly recommend a trip to Cordovado to see the stunning <strong>historical re-enactments and the Palio dei Rioni.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>300 people in historical costumes<\/strong> go through the town on a breathtaking parade from the medieval castle to the large archery range. There, teams from the different districts in the town battle it out in tests of speed, strength and skill that are all part of the Palio dei Rioni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watching the evocative displays is like travelling back through time and experiencing life in the olden days: <strong>there are flag-wavers, medieval dinners and games<\/strong>, painted ladies, dancing, music and <strong>drums playing a feverish beat<\/strong>, not to mention specially decorated inns and osterias serving a rustic soup called \u201c<strong>Zuppa del Bifolco<\/strong>\u201d and other delights. For information, contact the Pro Cordovado Association: <a href=\"mailto:procordovado@gmail.com\">procordovado@gmail.com<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to get to Cordovado<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Cordovado is <strong>just 10 kilometres from Portogruaro<\/strong> and it takes about 15 minutes to drive there. Take the SP463 provincial road and go through the little village of Cintello along Via Garibaldi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also travel from Portogruaro to Cordovado by <strong>taxi or bus<\/strong>, but bear in mind that there are only a couple of buses a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you decide to <strong>cycle to Cordovado <\/strong>from Portogruaro, we recommend going via <strong>Portovecchio, Boldara and Gruaro<\/strong>, because it\u2019s a quieter road so it&#8217;s better for bike rides. In addition, the scenery is beautiful and you&#8217;ll go past a number of interesting sites, such as the <strong>Boldara Watermills<\/strong>, the<strong> Stalis Watermills<\/strong> and the <strong>Fontana di Venchiaredo<\/strong>.
