The Mouth of the Piave<\/strong> is just a few kilometres east of Jesolo, where the river finally meets the Adriatic Sea at Cortellazzo<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mouth of the Piave<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Piave originates near Sappada<\/em> in the Carnic Alps<\/em> at an altitude of over 2,000 metres and travels more than 230 km southward, crossing the provinces of Belluno<\/em>, Treviso<\/em> and Venice<\/em>, before reaching the Adriatic at the small fishing village of Cortellazzo<\/strong>, just east of Jesolo<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the Mouth of the Piave River<\/strong>, and it’s where the river’s long journey ends in a delta of wetlands, sandbanks and coastal pinewoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During World War One<\/strong>, the Piave formed a critical defensive line. The Battle of the Piave River<\/em> in June 1918 was a turning point for Italian forces, and the river has been known as the “Sacred River of the Homeland” ever since. The Porto di Piave Vecchia<\/a>, just upstream, is another reference point closely tied to this wartime history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the area around the Mouth of the Piave<\/strong> is peaceful, a protected coastal environment that draws naturalists, cyclists and anyone who wants a break from the beach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natural landscape and wildlife at the river mouth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What makes the Mouth of the Piave<\/strong> ecologically special is the patchwork of habitats compressed into a relatively small area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the dunes around the river mouth, you’ll find an unusual meeting of Alpine and Mediterranean vegetation. In the Cortellazzo pinewood, growing on fossilised dunes on the Jesolo<\/a> side, you’ll find the alpine orchid Gymnadenia conopsea<\/em>. Across the river in the Gaggia pinewood, the Neottia nidus-avis<\/em>, an orchid more typical of mountain beechwoods, is found. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The waters are also rich in marine fish, including garfish (Belone belone<\/em>), and the adjacent Laguna del Mort, <\/strong>formed after a flood of the Piave in the early 1900s, extends the freshwater and brackish habitat further inland. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lagoon is one of the most important wetland sites in the province of Venice for bird life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
