The Venetian Senate had them built in 1632 to move cargo boats between the river and the lagoon, and to collect tolls on the goods they carried. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost 400 years later, the gates still open for boats, and the old toll house beside them is now a hotel and restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this guide, you&#8217;ll learn how the locks worked, how to reach them from Jesolo, Cavallino or Venice, what to see nearby and which cycling and walking routes start from the gates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the Porte del Cavallino, and why do they matter?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Porte del Cavallino<\/strong> are navigation locks where the Casson canal meets the Sile river, at the north-eastern entrance to the Cavallino-Treporti peninsula. &#8220;Porte&#8221; simply means gates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They let boats move between the river and the lagoon, which sit at different water levels, and they still carry leisure traffic along the Litoranea Veneta, an inland waterway of about 127 km running parallel to the Adriatic coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Built:<\/strong> 1632, by order of the Venetian Senate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Waterways:<\/strong> the Sile on one side, the Casson canal and the northern lagoon on the other<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Municipality:<\/strong> technically Jesolo, although the name and history belong to Cavallino<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Today:<\/strong> working locks, a footbridge for cyclists and walkers, and a historic inn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d12638.125623941502!2d12.577645390862251!3d45.49367983010264!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x477c0022f8c93481%3A0x8088ab2a29a056b0!2sPorte%20del%20Cavallino!5e0!3m2!1ses!2ses!4v1792421281014!5m2!1ses!2ses\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" style=\"border:0;\" allowfullscreen=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the Porte del Cavallino locks worked for the Venetian Republic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silt was a constant threat to Venice. Rivers such as the Piave and the Brenta washed sediment into the lagoon, and a shallower lagoon meant blocked shipping channels and weaker defences for the city. During the 17th century, the Republic responded by diverting several rivers so they emptied straight into the sea. The Sile was redirected into the Piave&#8217;s old channel, which is why its mouth is still known as Piave Vecchia, or &#8220;old Piave&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this diversion created a new problem: the river and the lagoon now sat at different water levels, and boats needed a way to cross between them. The Porte del Cavallino solved this. The 8.5 km Three Waters Park route begins here and follows the Casson canal down to the mouth of the Sile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heading north instead, the Via Cristo Re runs for more than 7 km along the Sile embankment. Further north, beyond Jesolo Paese, the Via Lio Maggiore covers about 7 km past fishing valleys such as Dragojesolo and Grassab\u00f2, some of the best spots for herons and egrets in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lampo.it\/en\/activities\/laguna-nord-veneto\/\">Laguna Nord<\/a>.
