Despite the recent origins of Porto Santa Margherita, which arose in the late 1960s, this locality can boast an ancient and curious historical quotation to know about, related to the “Rape of the Maidens.”

In the 10th century a group of Dalmatian pirates kidnapped some young women in Venice with their wedding dowries on the night of February 1.

The liberation of the maidens and the origin of the name Maiden Bank

The Venetian fleet, headed by the Doge, chased the pirates and caught up with them right at the coast of Porto Santa Margherita where they had stopped to refresh themselves and managed to free the girls.

From then on, the area took the name of Donzelle Bank for a long time until its tourist development began.
