The Dogaress

Venetian Female from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century

“The dogaress between history and myth. Female Venetianity from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century”

A unique and original exhibition itinerary which for the first time draws attention and sheds light on the figure of the dogaressa, the consort of the Venetian doge, highlighting her role and importance in the times of the Serenissima, and which today we can consider as First Lady ante litteram.

The exhibition allows you to immerse yourself in and explore female Venetianness through a selection of paintings, books, prints, fabrics, clothes and glass. Tangible testimonies referring to a vast anthology of events and episodes taken from the lives of some of the most famous dogaresses and many other illustrious female figures up to Peggy Guggenheim, all women who promoted entrepreneurial projects and many other innovative and visionaries that have come down to us.
